How To Detox Your Life And Have A Fresh Start (10 Tips)

Sharing is caring!

The older I have become the more I can see why the need to detox your life is necessary every now and again.

As the years go on we begin to collect junk, things that are not helpful to our current situation.

Just image someone who is a hoarder.

First, they start by perhaps keeping an egg carton, then old newspapers then clothes that they can never fit into.  All of these things are collected “just in case”.

When you look at a hoarders home you might see it and think “how does someone get to this point?” Well, if the truth be told we all hoard in some way or another.

It may not be physical items it could also be things that are a part of our routines or in our minds.

You see the thing is that a hoarder does not necessarily see that they are a hoarder.  It takes time for them to get to a point where there is no longer space for them to freely walk around their home.

You may see it and get a shock because you are seeing everything all at once but the truth be told it took time to get to that point.

It is a collection of items that grew over a period of time.

Your situation may not be as physical as that but we all hoard in some way, shape or form.

What is a detox?

A detox simply means to get rid of things that you no longer need, things that are holding you back and weighing you down.

I know some people like to start good habits at the beginning of the year but you can start at any point you see fit.

It’s important to detox your life periodically to make sure you don’t have things that are weighing you down and stopping you from being effective in life.

What can you do to detox your life?

Let’s get right to talking about that now.

10 Ways To Detox Your Life

1. Get Rid Of Old Clothes

Now you may think that getting rid of old clothes sounds simple and that won’t do anything for you but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Firstly getting rid of clothes that no longer fit or are no longer suitable means that you are free to declutter and clear a space.

Every time you clear physical space you get to think a little bit more clearly.

Also getting rid of old clothes is a great way to support the new you.

What’s the point of hanging on to clothes that no longer fit now that you have lost weight?

Are you predicting that you will put the weight back on again?

Or keeping the clothes that you used to wear that meant people did not take you seriously, why would you still want them?

I’m all for comfy clothing but not if it takes up the majority of your wardrobe.

Get rid of what you don’t need and find it a new home where it is suitable for someone else.

If you haven’t worn it in 12 months, donate it.

2. Sort Through Paperwork

Paperwork, the one thing that people love to hold onto.

Paperwork can be really unsightly especially if it is not organised effectively.

Take some time out to go through your paperwork.

If you don’t need it dump it.  Anything that you do need, find a way to organise it.

Something like this is great for keeping paperwork organised and out of sight until you need it.

3. Start Eating Healthy

What’s on the inside usually shows on the outside.

If you are a terrible eater then its time to start thinking about eating more healthy in order to detox your life.

Detoxing your life doesn’t just mean the things that you can see.

Your body is also a part of your life so you need to keep it in good shape.

Let’s face it bad eating habits will only cause ill health giving you limited lifestyle.

If you are worried about doing this, start small and get rid of one bad eating habit at a time until you are happy with your progress.

4. Get Rid Of Toxic Friendships

The wrong types of friendships can seriously hinder your progress in life.

You need friends that will tell you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it.

I’m not talking about the friends that tell you things to make you feel bad about yourself or that tell you things so they can feel good that you are feeling bad.

I’m talking about only keeping friendships that come from a place of love.

Anything other than that is a waste of your time.

Get rid of them.

5. Reorganise Your Room

I can’t say that I’m a huge Feng Shui fan but I am a fan of changing things around from time to time in order to give a fresh perspective.

Start with the room that you spend most of your time in and move things around a little.

A small action like this can help you have clearer thinking in your day.

6. Do A Digital Detox

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t need to do a digital detox at some point.

If your inbox is full of junk start deleting and unsubscribing from things that are no longer helpful to you.

Go through your computer and delete things that are taking up space unnecessarily.

If you don’t need it, delete it, don’t become a digital hoarder.

7. Start Exercising

Exercising can be a great way to help bring order to your life.

Fresh air and just taking that little bit of time out can make all the difference.

You don’t need to start with doing a full-on 2-mile run you can start slowly and go for a short walk each day.

You’ll be surprised just how much difference a little bit of exercise can make.

8. Clear Out Your Makeup

I don’t know about you but I recently realised that I have been holding on to make up that is years old (yuck!)

I don’t even wear it anymore but for some reason, I had unknowingly begun to keep this collection which seemed to be growing.

If that sounds like you, it’s called hoarding.

Get rid of makeup that is no longer suitable, has dried up or expired.

Every 6 months or so go through your makeup collection and get rid of what you don’t need.

9. Stop Negative Thoughts

We are all guilty of having negative thoughts at some point.  It’s actually natural.

What is not good is how long you hold onto that negative thought for and how much power you allow it to have.

I remember a few years ago I heard someone say, you can’t stop the birds flying over your head but you don’t have to let them nest there.

The saying was just so profound for me.

Negative thoughts may come your way but it’s up to you what happens next.

Do you want to sit and ponder on something negative or do you want to brush it off and get on with what is important?

Negative thoughts will only bring you down its as simple as that.

10. Add Self-Care To Your Routine

Self-care is so important.

Its something that I lost for a few years and I didn’t realise how important it is.

Taking time out to do something that you enjoy helps you to reset.

We all need to reset every now and again.

It could be after a bad day at work or just because you feel fed up and stuck in a rut.

No matter the reason find some time for yourself.

Remember you can’t pour love into anyone else if you have nothing to pour from.

Final Thoughts On Detoxing Your Life

Doing a periodic detox is so helpful in getting you to reach your life goals.

The less baggage you have the easier it is to move forward.
