Why A Hair Care Routine Is Needed

Having a hair care routine may not seem important to you at first but it’s always best to have one. Having a hair care routine will ensure that your hair remains in a healthy state and that you are doing everything that you should be doing.

If you don’t have one then the chances are that you will be missing out on important things that your hair needs.

A lot of us are having to do a lot of unlearning when it comes to our hair so having a routine that we regularly follow will help a lot.

What You Need To Understand About Your Routine

One of the major things you need to understand when it comes to establishing a good hair care routine is that your routine is going to be specific to your particular hair.

No two people will necessarily have the same routine because no two people have the exact type of hair.

Even those who have the same “hair type” don’t necessarily have the same type of hair. For example, two people can have 4c hair but one of them may have hair that is denser and the other thin meaning that the products they use will be completely different.

You need to establish what will be the best hair care routine for your particular hair.

What The Best Hair Care Routine Should Include For Your Hair

1. Shampoo

Shampooing your hair is an essential part of your hair care routine. You need to work out how often your hair needs to be shampooed that is right for you.

If you are someone that tends to use a lot of products you may find that you need to shampoo more often than the person next to you who uses less.

If you live in a hot country and sweat a lot, you may need to wash your hair more often.

If on the other hand you are not a person who is heavy handed with products and don’t get a lot of natural scalp buildup then you can probably wash your hair less.

2. Conditioning

Conditioning your hair is an important step in caring for your hair. When you condition your hair you are replacing some of the moisture that is lost during the process of shampooing.

Never skip on conditioning your hair after shampooing.

3. Deep Conditioning

Learning how often and when to deep condition your hair is really important.

When you deep condition you are moisturising your hair in a way that no other treatment will.

Deep conditioning makes sure that the strands of your hair are moisturised right to the core.

You should aim to deep condition your hair at least once a month. You can certainly tweak this as you begin to learn and understand more about your natural hair.

It is possible to over moisturise your hair so you need to be careful with this one.

4. Protein Treatments

Protein treatments can be beneficial to hair. Protein is what gives your hair strength and it is particularly beneficial to those who have high porosity hair.

If you have high porosity hair having the occasional protein treatment will help you to seal in that much needed moisture.

Just remember to get the balance of protein and moisture right so that you don’t end up with further problems.

5. Leave-In Conditioner

Using a leave-in conditioner on a daily basis or every few days will help to keep your hair moisturised in between hair wash days.

There are so many things that can cause your hair to dry out over the course of a week (most people wash their hair over the weekend) so having a good leave-in conditioner will help to make sure that your curls stay hydrated.

If you are not sure where to start this is a good leave-in to use.

6. Detangle

Learning how to correctly detangle your hair is going to be something you need to learn to do properly.

Detangling your hair is important because when your hair tangles it causes breakage, split ends and single strand knots.

If you want to learn more about detangling your hair and the right way to do it you can read about it here.

Other Great Tips To Help Keep Your Hair Healthy

These are additional tips that you can use to keep your hair in a healthy state. You don’t need to necessarily make this part of your hair care routine but you should certainly keep them in mind.

1. Trim Your Hair

Trimming your hair will help to minimise split ends.

There is no set frequency as to how often you need to trim your hair.

You only need to trim your hair when it is needed.  Doing so on a regular pattern is unnecessary because you could be trimming hair that is already healthy.

When you do that you are not benefiting your hair in any way, just losing length.

Learn to keep an eye on the ends of your hair and assess when you are due for a trim.

Please make sure that if you are going to trim your own hair that you do it with professional scissors like these or you will end up with more split ends than you started off with!

2. Seal In Moisture

If you notice that your hair is suffering from dryness during the course of the day you might find that using the LOC method will help you to seal in moisture in your hair.

The LOC method simply stands for liquid, oil, cream. You can learn more about the LOC method here.

3. Clarifying

We all need to clarify our hair from time to time. Clarifying your hair is not necessarily the same as shampooing it.

Clarifying your hair is much more intense than shampooing because it removes all of the product buildup on your hair and basically resets your hair.  It is not something that you want to do as regularly as you shampoo.

If you are a person who uses a lot of products or lives in an area with hard water, then you may need to clarify more often than not.

4. Don’t Overmanipulate Your Hair

Over manipulation is one of the things that is detrimental to the progress of your hair.

Over manipulation will cause split ends at best and breakage at worst.

Keeping your hair in simple or protective hairstyles will do wonders for your hair.

5. Try A Scalp Massage

When you massage your scalp you stimulate blood circulation and distribute your hair’s natural sebum through your hair.

Doing this is great for hair growth and the feel good factor.

You do not need to do this as part of your putting together your best hair care routine but you should do it every now and again when you remember.

6. Use The Inversion Method

The inversion method is new to a lot of people but there are similar benefits in the inversion method as there are in doing a scalp massage.

You can learn more about the inversion method here.

7. Sleep With A Satin Bonnet

Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase will help to make sure that you don’t lose moisture from your hair whilst you sleep.

It’s an investment in your hair that will only ever pay you back in benefit.

Does Hair Type Make A Difference To Your Routine?

Yes, it certainly does. For some looser textures of hair, you might find that you don’t need to use many products because your natural sebum will do most of the work for you.

The products that you choose to use will also be affected because you may find heavier oils and creams will be too heavy for your hair.

It’s important during this process to really see the things that your hair likes and does not like.

Will my hair care routine be affected by my hair porosity?

It most certainly will.  Once you have established how porous your hair is it makes it a lot easier to see what will work best for your hair.

To learn more about hair porosity you can read about it here.
