Have you ever woken up in the morning thinking about all the things that you have to get done only to be left feeling that it’s not going to be a good day or that it’s going to be a stressful day?

How to start your day with a positive mindset

1. Brain dump the night before

I can’t stress how powerful brain dumping is. Brain dumping is basically where you write down everything that you have to get done so that it’s written on paper and out of your head.

The idea behind it is that you will feel a lot lighter mentally once you have done this.  I can assure you that it works!

You can do a brain dump at any time of the day but I prefer to do it at night time because it allows me to get a better night’s sleep.

If you are like me and go to bed with a million different tabs open in your mind then this is the perfect habit for you to start.

I have a little diary just like this one where I write down all the things that I need to get done the night before and once I have finished doing it I already feel 10 times lighter.

Practice the habit of doing this at night time or any time that makes sense for you.

2. No social media for at least the first hour after you wake up

If you are a social media fan it can be tempting to reach for your phone as soon as you open your eyes in the morning but you must resist the temptation to do this.

Social media is full of information overload and can easily make you feel stressed out.

Nothing good comes from this.  In fact, it’s likely that you will spend too much time on it will cause you to become delayed and make you in a rush to get to where you need to get to that day.

Social media also has a very good way of making us feel inferior. It’s easy to be convinced that people around us are doing much better in life than we are.

If you spend your first few precious moments each morning on social media then it will likely not put you in a great mood for the rest of the day.

Try to stay away from social media for at least the first hour after you wake up.

3. Happy thoughts only

Believe it or not happy thoughts start with you.  No one just wakes up happy.

You have to be intentional about it.

It’s not something that you will be able to master overnight but it is something that you should aim towards.

It’s easy to let little things upset us before we even leave the house in the morning but you must try your best to let it ride over you.

What I mean by this is to put the situation into perspective.

I’ll give you an example.

Sometimes I can let little things get on my nerves.  It could be that one of the children left their clothes on the floor again after I’ve told them several times not to do that.

A few minutes later I hear that someone’s child is sick and has ended up in the hospital.  Suddenly everything is in perspective and clothes lying on the floor doesn’t seem as irritating as it was before.

This example might seem a little extreme but you can find 10 other smaller examples that will have the same effect on you if you look hard enough.

4. Plan for 1 good thing that day

This is really important. Plan something good for yourself for the day.

It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive it can be small as long as it is something that will keep you in good spirits.

Take out time to grab a coffee with a friend, treat yourself to a special lunch, have some me-time in the park.

Anything that has the capacity to put a smile on your face will work a treat.

Have a treat prepared to look forward to

5. Allow for time

Always allow yourself enough time in the mornings.

There is nothing worse than waking up late and having to rush around like a crazy person just to get somewhere on time.

Before going to bed set your alarm clock so that you have enough time in the morning to get ready without rushing.

You should be able to leave yourself enough time to have breakfast, get dressed and do your makeup if you want to.

Allowing for time means that you won’t be stressed out and therefore you stand a much better chance at maintaining a positive mindset for the rest of the day.

6. Consider your goals

Goals are things that help you to remain motivated that’s why it’s so important for you to have some and write them down onto paper.

Each day take a few minutes to remember your goals and the necessary things you are going to do that day to help you get there.

Your goal may be a big one but there are smaller steps that you have to complete along the way to achieve your big goal.

Each day review those small goals as they are stepping stones to your big goal. They will also help you to keep your positive mindset going for the whole day.

7.  Go for it

Stop thinking about the things that could possibly go wrong and think about the things that could go right for the day.

You might get that contract you’ve been waiting for for so long.

Your child might get into that private school you’ve been hoping for.

You might have a good day without too much effort.

Stop focusing on the things that could go wrong and put all your energy into the things that can go right for you.

Final thoughts on having a positive mindset

A positive mindset is a choice that you have to consciously make.  Take the time to love and appreciate yourself and everything else will fall into place.

Love who you are, flaws and all.

That will put you on the path to self-belief and a positive mindset that you can carry always.
