Natural Hair In A Bun: How To Make It Look Awesome! (No Matter The Length)

Sharing is caring!

One of my most favourite hairstyles of all time has to be having my natural hair in a bun.

Having my hair this way is so simple to do but best of all I can dress it up or down according to the look that I want to go for.

When I first did my big chop it was one of the things that I missed the most about having my hair so short.

I would regularly check to see if my hair could finally meet the bun status.

If you have short or medium length hair, all is not lost though you can still pull off a beautiful bun.  We’ll take a look at that in just a moment.

Why the natural hair bun works so well

The great thing about having your natural hair in a bun is that it is so simple to do and believe it or not they are extremely versatile.

You can have high buns, low buns, messy buns, sleek looking hair buns and even faux buns if you don’t have hair long enough or if you want to have a massive looking hair bun.

Seriously the options are endless!

Natural hair buns are usually a go-to hairstyle for many people not just because they can be done in a short amount of time but also they give the illusion that your hair is fresh even if it is desperate for a wash.

The hair bun has saved me many times when I haven’t quite yet had a chance to wash and deep condition my hair yet.

How to put your natural hair in a bun

These are the very simple steps to get your hair in bun super fast.

  • If you are not starting with freshly washed hair then spritz your hair with a little water.  You can even add a little aloe vera juice to this to help keep your hair moisturized.
  • Make sure you have all the bits you need ready to hand like bobby pins, hair band, hairbrush and gel (optional)
  • Gather your hair into one and tie it with the hairband (not too tight)
  • Use the bobby pins to secure the ends of your hair in place.
  • Rub some hair gel in your hands and rub it into your hair if you want a sleek look.
  • Use the hairbrush to gently tidy up the hair
  • Finally, wrap a headscarf around your hair for about 15 minutes until the hair is set.

Buns on medium hair

If you prefer a sleek bun on your natural hair then this is a great way to achieve that.

It just goes to show you that you can get amazing results even with medium length hair.

This is the perfect example of an elegant looking low bun on natural hair.

Buns on short hair

If you thought that you couldn’t do a perfect bun on short hair then this video proves you wrong.

It is totally possible to achieve great results as long as you can get most of your hair into a bun.

If you don’t want to have a tiny little piece of hair sticking out of the top then adding faux hair is the perfect way to get the results that you want.

Fake it till you make it as they say!

Things to watch out for when you do a bun on natural hair

I love a bun as much as the nest person but when it comes to bunning your natural hair there are a few things that you should be careful of.

1. Stop pulling

Never pull your hair too tight.  I know we all want to have sleek looking hair but pulling aggressively just to get the look will cause your natural hair to start thinning around the edges.

You might have a nice hairstyle for today but what about tomorrow?

You don’t what to end up being one of these ladies that has to add black eyeshadow to your edges just so you don’t look bald.

2. Switch up the location

It’s easy to fall in love with a hairstyle so much that you want to recreate it every day but honestly, it’s not in your best interest.

If you like having your hair in a bun consider switching up the location.

If you continuously have your hair in the same spot every day you will be causing way to much tension in that area of your hair.

This could lead to unnecessary breakage.

3.  Avoid sleeping with it

I’ve done it in the past myself before and it’s a terrible habit to have.

Try not to sleep with your hair in a bun all the time especially if you like to do your buns tight.

There is just too much tension when you leave your hair in a bun for days on end.

Buns are fairly quick to do so consider letting your hair loose at the end of the day and redoing it in the morning if you need too.

Final thoughts on having your natural hair in a bun

While having your hair in a bun is a convenient hairstyle to have you must be aware that doing it too often especially in the same place can cause a lot of damage.

There are lots of different ways to achieve a bun so mix it up a little and don’t get stuck in a bunning routine.

Aside from that, enjoy your bun and remember to keep it moisturised!
